60 Seconds or Less

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden…

but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil…

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

(Genesis 3:1-6 ESV)

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

(Romans 7:18-19 ESV)

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,

(James 1:2 ESV)

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

(John 16:33 ESV)

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.

(Romans 7:21 ESV)

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

(Genesis 3:1 ESV)

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

(Genesis 3:2-2 ESV)

Mistake #1:

She didn’t rebuke the devil’s challenge.

Ephesians 4:27

In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, to not give the devil a foothold.

Isn’t that waiting until marriage stuff outdated?

How else will we know if we are compatible?

Isn’t Jesus all about love?

Why not just do what you want, He’ll forgive you right?

Who did Jesus say to love?

He said enemies and neighbors but could He mean just those who are easy to love?

Did God really want me to tithe?

Surely He meant to give when you have a little extra money left over…After all He knows your struggling to make ends meet doesn’t He?

And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
(Matthew 4:2-4 ESV)

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
(Matthew 4:5-7 ESV)

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”

Then the devil left him…
(Matthew 4:8-11 ESV)

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

(Genesis 3:4-5 ESV)

Mistake #2:

She considered the sin.

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.

(2Corinthians 10:4-5 ESV)

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked…

(Genesis 3:6-7 ESV)

Mistake #3:

She gave in to sin.

For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life — is not from the Father but is from the world.

And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

(1John 2:16-17 ESV)

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it –

George Santayana

What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.

(Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV)

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(1Corinthians 10:13 ESV)
